Targeting professional development via one hour soft skills training.

Investment in professional development brings financial returns.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that an increase in productivity resulting from targeted training can yield a return on investment of more than 30%.

Unfortunately studies definitively demonstrating these returns on training investments are rare. This can create issues for managers seeking budgetary approvals to invest in upskilling their staff as they are unable to pinpoint case studies that outline the exact financial benefits of training.

Furthermore, within many industries, such as retail and transport, the declining fiscal outlook in recent years has led to a reigning in of training expenditure.

McDonald and Fyffe (2001) reporting to the Australian National Training Authority claim through their research that the best performing Australian companies have a sustained commitment to training, not because higher profits allow for increased expenditure on training but rather increased expenditure on training increases profits. This underlines the importance of training to all companies, regardless of size.

Not only does training lead to increased profits, but further Australian research has also found that the profitability of firms is directly related to the quantity and quality of training they provide (Blandy, 1999). The available literature indicates that training contributes to enterprise performance, either by increasing productivity or reducing production costs, and impacts positively on other dimensions of operations such as absenteeism.

There is a clear correlation between time,  productivity and training. There are solutions.

Some businesses have scaled-down with the view of driving better financial returns via more efficient ways of working, or fewer people doing more.  In these instances, the appetite for training has begun to focus on short, targeted sessions, versus a full day or multiple day training.

Some choose to invest in eLearning or microlearning which reduces the need for training rooms and facilitators.  Certainly some training content, such as regulatory training lends itself to this model. Training can be easily tracked, time to complete the training can be added into rostering requirements.

However, soft skills training, for many, is preferred to be conducted in a face to face environment. Stories are shared. Insights are given by learning consolidation activities.

The key to ensuring that learning is maximised in these environments include:

  • Including relevant examples that learners can relate to in their workplace.
  • Market the benefits to the learners of what they will learn and will take away from attending the training.
  • Reduce the time to create training content by purchasing editable training materials. Edit content, don’t create it!
  • Followup with suggestions and actions for both the learner and their manager.
  • Ask for learner feedback as to what they have been able to implement. Use this data as a way to promote future sessions, and to align return on investment in learning,
  • Ensuring that the learner is engaged in their development, and planned training. Don’t be the manager or training department that sends someone to training without them knowing ‘the why’.
